Medicine Verification
To prevent falsified medicines from reaching patients, a special security system has been developed in Europe: The European Medicines Verification System (EMVS).
EMVS works as a digital network. When a pharmacy or hospital dispenses the medicine, a mandatory barcode is scanned and verified against a common European database. If there is anything suspicious, the medicine will not be dispensed. The system makes it possible to quickly detect and stop falsified medicines before they are dispensed. Having a verification system implemented also has a preventive effect.
In Denmark, the prescription medicine is verified against the Danish Medicine Verification System (DMVS) before it is dispensed from the pharmacy or hospital. DMVS is integrated with the overall European system. EMVS thus protects patients all over Europe and helps to ensure a safe and secure supply chain for the medicines that are dispensed.
